If you do not know, CPU produces heat when it is used. If the heat produced by the CPU is more than a specific limit, it may harm your PC by slowing down its performance and subsequently affecting it adversely. Proper cooling measures should be adopted for maintaining the CPU temperature and it is also important that you must monitor the temperature of your CPU and other components. If you are using Intel processor, you may want to try out Real Temp. Real Temp is a temperature monitoring program designed particularly for all Intel Single Core, Dual Core, Quad Core and Core i7 processors.
After doing some wikipedia research, I found out that technically each core on the Intel processors has a Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) that reports temperature data relative to TJMax (Temperature Junction Max) which is the safe maximum temperature for the CPU. As the CPU heats up, the distance to TJMax decreases and if the distance reaches to zero, your PC will start to thermal throttle or slow down. It means that the distance to TJMax should be maintained. If the distance from TJMax is optimum, your PC will work on full speed and will be more reliable.
